Large re-equipment of "Volgo-Don" type vessel "Sympathy" was completed
Sahin Shipyard (Tuzla, Turkey) completed large modernization of vessel "Sympathy" (1565 prj.) of "Volgo-Don" type.
Re-equipment project was designed by the Marine Engineering Bureau (MEB).
After re-equipment the vessel has achieved Russian Maritime Register of shipping class notation of KM L4 R2-RSN.
The re-equipment project base is idea of usage high (3.5 m taking into consideration existing coamings) continuous longitudinal hatch coamings that allow to increase standard of general strength of vessel's hull (by 71%), cargo holds' capacity, tonnage in accordance with International Load Lines Convention. Existing coamings and previous upper deck were the most loaded elements that worked out their fatigue resource. These elements were located in the zone near to the neutral axis of the equivalent beam, so they were excluded from the general hull bend that allowed to save them as hull elements. Moment of inertia increase without bottom thickness increase allowed to increase bottom section modulus for 2.07 times.
Forecastle height was increased for 1.4 m to improve sailing qualities. Moreover, sides' shell between decks in aft area was mounted, so full scale poop superstructure was generated.
Conventional vessel's deadweight was increased from 4350 tons up to 6217 tons (by 1867 tons or by 42.9%), cargo holds' capacity increased from 6371 cub. m up to 9292 cub. m (by 2921 cub. m or by 45.8%).
Main works were made at the shipyard, as follows:
• Mounting of the new longitudinal cargo hatch coamings (height increasing of the existing ones by 2.5 m) with new main deck mounting;
• generation of poop superstructure;
• additional transverse bulkheads mounting in cargo area (there were two holds on the vessel before re-equipment, after re-equipment there are four holds);
• forecastle height and length increasing;
• considerable repair of shell and frames, machines and mechanisms, gearings, electronics.
Vessel was re-equipped for dangerous goods transportation (CO2 fire extinguishing and ventilators in holds) and she satisfied all the International Conventions requirements (emergency diesel-generator and emergency fire pump were mounted).
After re-equipment vessel "Sympathy" is of cargo double-screw type with 4 cargo holds, with double bottom and double sides, with forecastle and poop, with ER and accommodation superstructure located aft.
The dry-cargo vessel is assigned for transportation of the general, bulk, timber, grain and large-sized cargoes, dangerous goods and coal.
Vessel's principal dimensions are as follows:
Overall length - 138.80 m;
Breadth - 16.50 m;
Depth - 5.50 m;
Draught (river/sea) - 3.60/4.10 m;
Deadweight (river/sea) - 4965/6217 t;
Hold's number - 4;
Cargo holds capacity - 9292 cub. m;
Ballast tanks capacity - 3006 cub. m;
Ballast draught - 2.65 m;
Hatch covers are of piggy back type.
Re-equipped dry-cargo vessel "Sympathy" has technical and economic indices that significantly exceed vessel's ones before re-equipment that allows her to be operated in the conditions of the river-sea going and sea transportations, including Black, Azov, Mediterranean Seas.
